ある時、消費者金融から国道を渡ってパチンコ屋に入っていく男がふと目に入りました。それまで当たり前に見ていた風景だったのに、「あれ？」と思ったんです。広大な土地のなかにパチンコ屋とＡＴＭが隣同士にあるので、一見便利には見えるんです。でも、同乗していた相沢と僕のなかで、これはちょっと異常な風景なんじゃないか、これは映画にするべきだ、と思ったのが『国道20号線』を撮り始めたキッカケです。
